Start with the vehicles you actually service

Coding and programming require more caution. Some tools offer configuration functions, injector coding, module replacement procedures or parameter changes, but availability varies by vehicle and software licence. These operations can affect safety, security and legal compliance. Confirm the tool’s authorised functions, follow manufacturer procedures and maintain stable battery support throughout the process.

Coverage claims need checking before purchase

“Multi-brand” is useful only when it means meaningful access to the systems you need. Before buying, compare the tool’s supported manufacturers, vehicle years and individual functions. A coverage list should answer practical questions: can it access EBS faults on the fleet’s trailers? Does it communicate with automated transmissions? Does it offer service reset functions for the lorries commonly serviced? Can it read manufacturer-specific live data rather than generic OBD information?

Communication protocol support is another practical issue. Older commercial vehicles may use different standards from later EURO 6 platforms, and newer vehicles may have protected gateways that restrict access unless the correct approved procedure is followed. Interface quality matters here. A low-cost adaptor that disconnects during a diagnostic session is false economy when a vehicle is occupying a bay.

For busy workshops, consider how the tool connects. A wired interface can be dependable around a vehicle, while wireless communication gives more freedom during road tests and inspections. Wireless systems still need reliable hardware, sensible pairing and enough battery capacity in the tablet or laptop. The best arrangement is the one technicians will use correctly every day.

Software costs are part of the purchase price

The purchase price is only one part of diagnostic tool ownership. Many commercial platforms require annual updates, subscriptions or paid manufacturer packages. Those costs can be justified when they provide current model coverage, technical data and new functions, but they should be visible before the tool enters the workshop.

Ask what happens when a subscription ends. In some cases, the tool remains usable with its existing software but receives no new coverage. In others, key functions may be restricted. Also check whether updates are supplied by the original manufacturer, an authorised distributor or a third party. Language support, fault descriptions and technical help are equally relevant. A code list without usable information still leaves the technician searching for answers. After a repair, rescan the relevant ECUs, confirm live values and complete any required relearn or calibration procedure.
